Ultimatley, we will be replicating data to an identical environment at a remote office, across the country. Compellent and EMC have historically had poor tiering performance. The issue is that tiering isn't very responsive to changing workload needs. Compellent would move data once a day as I recall. EMC would move data in 1 GB chunks between tiers. If you went all flash, I would be less concerned about tiering.
I suggest you look at a software defined storage solution as mentioned above, and Nimble Storage as an alternative to the Dell EMC products that your consultants are pushing. Nimble is in the process of being acquired by HPE right now.
